This piece of slate was carved to remember the life a great man who passed away unexpectedly, leaving a legacy of love and helping others. Measuring 12″ x 12″ x 1″, the stone was gathered from Maine. Slate is a stone carver’s dream, which takes and shows each chisel stroke with great care.
This piece was laid out with Trajan capital letters, followed by a light script styled font for the dates and the short quote. The final touch of the border was meant to grab the eye while accentuating the important words inside. Carved completely by hand in with a hammer and carbide-tipped chisel.
While not a headstone, this rock was created for the purpose of being almost a “secondary” memorial, more clearly in the regular view of the family.
The following gallery displays various pieces of the project, from beginning to end.
